From the moment we wake up until we close our eyes at night, we interact with others to get things done. The hardest negotiations involve conflict. Whether we fight back, shut down, or avoid conflict all together, breakdowns with other people rarely bring out best skills or better nature. During this exciting weekend, you will learn how working with timeless principles and your own life story can deepen and expand your effectiveness to engage and resolve tough conflicts. From working well with clients and colleagues to living well with your family and friends, this program gives you insights and skills to turn stressful situations into success and satisfaction. Erica Ariel Fox, JD, teaches negotiation at Harvard Law School and is the founder of the Global Negotiation Insight Institute. Swiss chip carving workshop Nov. 13-15, 2009 UAF Matanuska Research Station, 1509 Trunk Rd, Palmer Get a start on your Christmas gifts. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Wood Products Program is hosting a Swiss chip carving class using Alaska woods for beginners. Chip carving is a direct and simple way to decorate furniture, cabinets, boxes, plaques, and utensils. Phil Marshall (www.polhavnwoodfabrik.com), a master of the Swiss style of chip carving, will show you step by step how you can beautify a number of objects using very few tools. Local aspen and spruce wood blanks will be used to demonstrate layout, design transfer and carving techniques. Sharpening will also be taught. This will be a weekend course (6-9 Friday and 9-5 Sat and Sun) limited to 10 students starting Friday night and going through Sunday (UAF-Palmer Research Station, Trunk Rd). On Friday night you will be taught an introduction to cuts. Saturday morning you will be taught how to make the borders and in the afternoon you will be taught how to carve a simple rosette. On Sunday you will learn how to make floral designs in the morning and lettering & numbers in the afternoon. Tools, book included in $50 fee.
