Description: Imagine an ocean without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and act.
The End of the Line is the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans.
Scientists predict that if we continue fishing the way we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048. In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food.
It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.
Tickets: $15
Tickets are limited so don't miss out!
Venue: The Regent Cinema, 167 Queen St, Brisbane City

Description: Webster University’s Holden Public Policy Forum will hold a series of “Pizza and Politics” events during the fall semester to discuss important issues and topics facing Missouri with key members of the Nixon administration and other state leaders. The final event, which is free and open to the public, and which includes free pizza and beverages for attendees, features Missouri Department of Economic Development Director Linda Martinez.
Formerly a lawyer with Bryan Cave in St. Louis, Martinez is the first woman named to head the state’s Department of Economic Development. Her legal experience focuses on tax credits, one of the cornerstones of Gov. Nixon’s economic recovery plan. Martinez will tackle these questions: Will Missouri prevail through the economic recession? What policies have she and the Nixon administration enacted to date? Is Missouri witnessing new economic development since she took office?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Pizza and Politics” is a town hall-style meeting, moderated by Forum founder and former Mo. Gov. Bob Holden, where public policy makers, members of the community and students discuss the political process and key issues of the day.
The Holden Public Policy Forum at Webster University is a bi-partisan speaker series, created by former Mo. Gov. Bob Holden and Webster University, to bring public policy leaders to St. Louis to discuss key national and international issues. Description: In voting for Barack Obama on November 4, 2008, millions of people sought a change from the previous eight years of the Bush administration.
One year later, a balance sheet can be drawn.
Far from “change,” Obama is deepening the right-wing policies of his predecessor—including handing out trillions of dollars to bail out the banks; expanding war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, continuing the occupation of Iraq and issuing new threats against Iran; and pushing through a health care overhaul aimed at cutting costs and care for millions of Americans.
While the bankers who created the crisis are now doing better than ever, the social crisis affecting masses of people is getting worse, as unemployment soars and wages fall.
Joseph Kishore, national secretary of the Socialist Equality Party will present a detailed analysis of the policies of the Obama administration and will explain the basis for an independent socialist movement of the international working class. |

Description: OPEN HEARTS, FULL PLATES
Hello Beloved Friend!
Welcome to autumn! We know that cooler days, warmer clothes, and the pleasure of joining together with friends and family are just around the corner. For each one of us the gift is different, but for everyone the holiday season affords us the illimitable opportunity for gratitude.
As we anticipate the freshness and activity of this festive time, a sizeable percentage of our local population will not. Thousands of men, women and children who co-exist just minutes away from us are getting ready for a totally different reality: an ongoing, stomach-lurching fear that they will not have a place to lay their body down this evening, or put some food--any food--into their child’s mouth before nightfall.
The numbers have nearly doubled in just two years. Look at the statistics:
Almost 140,000 people now live without permanent shelter in LA County.
Single parent families with small children are the largest growing sector on the street.
In the San Fernando Valley, a place once regarded a bastion of middle-class stability and security, nearly 13,000 residents wonder where they will sleep tonight.
We know that this is not okay with you. We also know that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the dismal poverty in our midst. You might be feeling pressed yourself at present. How can you be part of something that requires little but really makes a difference?
Many Paths World Service has an answer.
A 501(c) 3 nonprofit, public-benefit charity devoted to visionary solutions to the challenges of today’s world, Many Paths World Service has launched “OPEN HEARTS, FULL PLATES,” a campaign that creates the only permanent location for meals served to those living without shelter in the San Fernando Valley. Prosperity House, a unique, high-quality soup kitchen is designed to provide over 200 nutritious meals each day in an enriching, nurturing environment that encourages visitors to see themselves as complete, spirit-filled beings.
The instant that news of Prosperity House got out, people started responding. Many Paths World Service raised over $13,000 since January, just by word of mouth and through Facebook, and we are grateful to our contributors. But now we must launch our vision in earnest, and bring it to completion.
Here’s how OPENING YOUR HEART goes to work for others:
$3,500 provides a commercial stove for nutritious soups prepared daily
$2,000 supplies comfortable dining room tables and cozy, padded chairs
$1,000 covers the tables with clean linens, quality dishware and silverware
$500 provides full plates for 500 people
$250 bathes the walls in radiant, tranquil colors
$100 furnishes books, chairs and lamps for an inspirational reading room
$___ choose the amount that feels right for you
Of course, Many Paths is involved in several other good works. We’ve begun to establish a core curriculum, multi-dimensional in scope and fully accessible to all. Already met with great success, it is our vision that this low-cost or free, introductory and advanced coursework will lead toward accreditation as well as non-denominational ordination. As always, Many Paths World Service, through its curriculum, provides a supportive inspirational and safe environment to effectively explore your spirituality with others no matter where you are on the path. There are many other ways to support our work, too.
Each donation is so important! And, when you participate in “Open Hearts, Full Plates,” you can choose the gift that you like best. Honor someone’s birthday, wedding or anniversary. Celebrate the memory of a loved one, or earmark your gift for a family’s 2010 Thanksgiving dinner. If you contribute in the name of someone special, we’ll send that person a lovely letter of acknowledgement.
Won’t you open your heart this holiday season? Each dollar of every tax-deductible donation brings Prosperity House closer to serving its first meal. We want you to join the Many Paths Community where everyone finds compassionate encouragement, so together, we deepen our experience, serve others in need and craft our common future.
Come with us, and begin the joyful work!
Mark Jacobs and Sue Mattson
Many Paths World Service
PS. Perhaps you know 1 friend or more who’s also passionate about feeding those who go hungry on our streets. Please forward our campaign. If you’d like a stack of contribution cards for your friends, just let us know and we’ll be happy to mail you as many as you need to spread the word. |

Description: The study of the state has traditionally been pursued by way of two complementary
tendencies: national historiographic works that examine the creation and vicissitudes
of this or that state and conceptual works that attempt to identify and explain the
nature or character of 'the state' as such. Both of these tendencies, in addition to
many other shared pitfalls, have usually taken the state as something that exists on a
plane above and beyond everyday social life. Whether focused on poets and
philosophers, kings and despots, wars and revolutions, or trade and treaties, the usual
point of view presupposed within the literature on the state is that one has to look 'up'
to see the state, that the state is external to and beyond the everyday.
In direct opposition to this tradition, recent developments in the social sciences have
led to current studies that attempt to uncover the everyday materiality of the state.
Rather then viewing the state as something external to 'civil society' or as 'above'
social agency, a new style of social inquiry has emerged that attempts to make sense
of the state as a product of everyday experiences and practices. This special half-day
workshop will bring together key researchers working in this tradition for the purposes
of taking stock of the current contributions that his literature has made toward the
study of state and helping to identify the key questions and problems that still need to
be addressed and examined.
Participants will include:
Peter Bratsis, University of Salford
Tim Hall, University of East London
Alex Jeffrey, University of Newcastle
Joe Painter, University of Durham
Glyn Williams, University of Sheffield
For those interested in history and politics.
