Description: EYES WIDE OPEN FLORIDA
Acclaimed War Casualties Exhibition in Melbourne FL
Sat. Nov. 28, 2009
10am - 5pm
Wells Park, 635 Hibiscus Blvd. Melbourne FL (next to the Melbourne Auditorium)
Over 245 Pairs of Combat Boots Representing U. S. Soldiers from Florida who have fallen in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and Civilian Casualties to be memorialized.
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in cooperation with the Peace Coalition Of Brevard, and local patriots will honor fallen U.S. military personnel and civilians with it's traveling exhibition: Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Florida.
EYES WIDE OPEN : The Cost of War to Florida focuses on the specific costs of war to the state of Florida. The exhibit includes 245 pairs of boots representing fallen servicemen and women from Florida, and a visual representation of civilian casualties. This exhibit is part of AFSC's national Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War network.
AFSC, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient is an international social justice organization. AFSC first created Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq. It opened in Chicago's Federal Plaza with just over 500 pairs of boots in January 2004. The national exhibit was last displayed on Memorial Day weekend 2007 with over 3,400 pairs of boots. This was the last time that the entire death toll was represented in one location. Since then the exhibition has been divided into state displays and traveled throughout the nation to smaller cities and towns. All the state exhibits combined now include more than 5271 pairs of combat boots representing U.S. military casualties in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
"The exhibit will be a site of quiet reflection and thought. Join us in the spirit of this solemn occasion. Let us make November 28th a day of reflection and spiritual transformation that honors those who have died and renews our commitment to create a more peaceful world."
-- Vicki Impoco, Florida State Coordinator EYES WIDE OPEN
The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service. It's work is based on the belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

Description: Global Wine Tour - Wine & Food Fundamentals: Level I
Join Steve Thurlow, Senior Editor for Wine Access magazine and one of Canada’s foremost experts on the subject of wine, at the historic Campbell House Museum on Saturday January 23rd where he will take you back to the basic fundamentals of food and wine!
This full day workshop is an introduction to the art of pairing food with wine. It is ideal for boosting the confidence of new wine drinkers when faced with making a wine choice at a restaurant, and also provides a foundation of knowledge for the intermediate wine aficionado who desires to learn more on this fascinating subject.
The elements of wine, often perceived as complicated, will become easier to grasp during the course of the day. Those attending will become familiar with the main styles of wine available, the major grape varieties used for making wine, and the most significant wine producing regions of the world. Wine styles are essentially determined by a few factors, which once appreciated and understood, will help with selecting the best wine for a particular dish.
You will practice wine tasting and describing wine as a route to pairing food with wine. The hands-on practical sessions will give you the self assurance to taste and describe wine in the same way that we have all been tasting food since our earliest days. The interaction of wine with basic food elements will be learned and practiced so that wines chosen from a list can be matched with appropriate menu selections.
The storage and service of wines will be covered, as will the healthy aspects of moderate wine consumption.
A couple of fun quizzes throughout the day will test your knowledge, and reward the highest scores with prizes!
This workshop will begin at 9AM and conclude at approximately 5PM. You will be provided with a course workbook and tasting sheets, as well as a set of 6 Global Wine Tour ISO collector wine tasting glasses to take home with you. A catered lunch will be provided, as well as coffee/tea and muffins in the morning.
Join Global Wine Tour for a one of a kind full day experience, and walk away knowledgeable in the art of pairing wine & food!
More information on this new full day workshop is available on the Global Wine Tour website at http://www.globalwinetour.com, send an email to info@globalwinetour.com, or call us at 416-909-0460 if you have any questions. |
