Walkers will also see the Discovery Center, an urban conservation area, the Kaufman Gardens, and the world famous Nelson Art Gallery. The newly revised route gives walkers a great view of the unique sculptures on the grounds at the Nelson. There is an alternate route which goes through the sculpture garden at the Nelson-Atkins Musuem and through the Kaufman Gardens.

Pendleton Heights is proud to announce its Third Annual Holiday Homes Tour, once again featuring four homes of the Victorian era decorated for the holidays. Pendleton Heights, Kansas City’s first suburb, is a historically-designated district and neighborhood a few minutes east of the Downtown River Market Area. Located on the western edge of the Northeast Area, Pendleton Heights still retains the vast majority of its original homes, constructed in the late 1880s and 1890s. The four homes selected to be in the 2009 tour, all built in the late 1880s, range in exterior design from Queen Anne to Shingle-Style, also featuring a style that is integral to our city’s architectural landscape: the “Kansas City Colonnade”. The interiors of these fine homes, all in various stages of rehabbing, present us with differing points of view. From darker, more authentic Victorian interiors complete with original fireplaces, doors and wood trim, to those that have been gutted and rebuilt from the inside out, wearing a decidedly more modern, yet no less charming face. From 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. on November 28th (the Saturday after Thanksgiving), these feature homes will have their first floors open for the advance ticket price of $10 through November 15th; tickets bought or ordered after November 15th are $12 each. Commemorative posters will also be for sale at each of the tour homes ($10 each). All proceeds go toward the Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. This walk will take you through the trendy Westport area and by the beautiful Vietnam Memorial. Most of the walk will be centered in the Country Club Plaza area, which is a virtual outdoor museum of Spanish architecture and European art. J.C. Nichols, a Kansas City developer created the Country Club Plaza in 1922 as the nation's first suburban shopping area. Walkers, while marveling at the beautiful Christmas lights, will have an opportunity to view the 130 foot tall reproduction of the Giralda Tower of Seville in Spain. Another Plaza wonder on the route is the beautiful Seville Light and Diana, one of the largest man-made waterfalls in the nation. Kansas City is second only to Rome in the number of fountains, so walkers will be viewing several beautiful fountains.

Visit the Whoville Holiday activity area which will take place every Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas from 11am-2pm, located next to Auntie Em's on the northeast corner of the Market Square. The Grinch will make an appearance each Saturday and will walk the City Market Square from 10:00 a.m. â€" 11:00 a.m. to wish everyone a happy holiday. The Grinch will then be available in the Whoville activity area where all visiting Who's can have your photo taken with the Grinch for a small fee or bring in three or more non-perishable canned good items for the “Help a Who Canned Good Drive” to benefit Harvesters and receive this special keepsake for free. Children will also have the opportunity to make Whoville themed tree ornaments, a Grinch mask and more in the Whoville activity area. A Cindy Lou Who Look-Alike-Contest will also take place each Saturday at Noon in the Whoville activity area. The winning Cindy Lou will receive a special holiday prize.

Jack Cole knows about the war on drugs from several perspectives. Cole retired as a Detective Lieutenant after a 26-year career with the New Jersey State Police. For twelve of those years Cole worked as an undercover narcotics officer. His investigations spanned the spectrum of possible cases, from street drug users and mid-level drug dealers in New Jersey to international "billion-dollar" drug trafficking organizations. Cole ended his undercover career living nearly two years in Boston and New York City, posing as a fugitive drug dealer wanted for murder, while tracking members of a terrorist organization that robbed banks, planted bombs in corporate headquarters, court-houses, police stations, and airplanes and ultimately murdered a New Jersey State Trooper. After retiring, Cole dealt with the emotional residue left from his participation in the unjust war on drugs by working to reform current drug policy. He moved to Boston to continue his education. Cole holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice and a Masters degree in Public Policy. Currently writing his dissertation for the Public Policy Ph.D. Program at the University of Massachusetts, his major focus is on the issues of race and gender bias, brutality and corruption in law enforcement. Cole believes ending drug prohibition will go a long way toward correcting those problems. A national and international speaker, Cole has taught courses to police recruits and veteran officers on ethics, integrity, moral decision-making, and the detrimental effects of racial profiling. He has spoken about drug policy: in colleges and universities; on many radio programs; and at conferences across the United States; and he has addressed the European Parliament, in Brussels, Belgium, on the subject of US drug policy. Cole is passionate in his belief that the drug war is steeped in racism, that it is needlessly destroying the lives of young people, and that it is corrupting our police. Cole's discussions give his audience an alternative perspective of the US war on drugs from the view of a veteran drug-warrior turned against the war.
