Description: For years, the European Commission and its free-marketeer Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy had firmly blocked all efforts to regulate hedge funds and private equity and had advocated self-regulation of the multi-trillion Euro industry. Against the will of the major political parties in the European Parliament, who had urged the Commission to come forward with plans for regulation already in 2008.Under considerable political pressure due to the financial crisis, and shortly before the elections to the new European Parliament, in April 2009 the Commission finally came forward with a proposal for a directive to regulate the managers of hedge funds and private equity funds (Alternative Investment Fund Managers).Right from the start, the proposal has sparked heated controversies. While the financial services industry under the leadership of the City of London has massively mobilised opposition to bring down the proposal, critics of the draft directive claim that it offers too many loopholes and does not regulate the funds themselves.
AK EUROPA and the ÖGB Europabüro want to take up the discussion at a crucial moment when the proposal is being negotiated by Member States and the European Parliament.

Author of Shot to Death: How and Why Karl Krogstad Makes Films
Thursday evening, December 3 @ 7 p.m.
Olympic Room, Main Library
1102 Taocma Avenue South
Over the course of his long career, legendary Seattle film artist Karl Krogstad has produced and directed more than 65 short and feature-length films, and has been honored with 30 awards from international film festivals. “Love him or hate him, there’s no denying the artistic imperative that drives his vision of experimental cinema,” says Seattle Weekly. According to Resonance Magazine, “the 54-year-old artist is irrepressible, annoying, P.T. Barnum and a self induced maniac.” Rolling Stone Magazine described Krogstad as "one of America’s greatest independent filmmakers.”
Krogstad began his zany and insightful career as writer, director and producer in 1968 and is one of Seattle's most celebrated independent filmmakers. A talented painter, Karl Krogstad's work is on exhibit at Tacoma's Two Vaults Gallery in November and December.
Presented in partnership with The Grand Cinema and Two Vaults Gallery. |
