The Universal declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United nations on 10th December 1948. It was the international communities' answer to the atrocities of the Nazi regime and the violence experienced in World War II. Today, almost every country recognises human rights as universal and unalienable rights of every human being. Nevertheless, the interpretation and implementation of human rights is still a controversial issue today. This applies particularly to Article 1 of the declaration.
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
This declaration confirms that every human being is entitled to rights and freedoms regardless of ethnic origin, skin colour, gender, language, religion, personal beliefs, national or social origins, property, birth or other status.

Americans generally like to hear good news…But is anyone prepared for the worst? Michael Ruppert, a former Los Angeles police officer turned independent reporter, predicted the current financial crisis in his self-published newsletter From the Wilderness at a time when most Wall Street and Washington analysts were still in denial. Director Chris Smith has always had a feeling for outsiders in films like American Movie and American Job. In COLLAPSE, Smith stylistically departs from his past films by interviewing Ruppert in a format that recalls the work of Errol Morris and Spalding Gray. Sitting in a room that looks like a bunker, Ruppert recounts his career as a radical thinker and spells out the crises he sees ahead…He is especially passionate over the issue of “peak oil,” the concern raised by scientists since the 1970s that the world will eventually run out of fossil fuel. While other experts debate this issue in measured tones, Ruppert doesn’t hold back at sounding an alarm. He portrays a future that resembles apocalyptic science fiction. Listening to his rapid flow of opinions, the viewer is likely to question some of the rhetoric as paranoid or deluded; and to sway back and forth on what to make of the extremism. Smith lets viewers form their own judgments.

Description: Seraphine is the story of Seraphine Louis aka Seraphine de Senlis (Yolande Moreau), a simple and profoundly devout housekeeper who in 1905 at age 41, self-taught and began painting brilliantly colorful canvases. In 1912 Wilhelm Uhde (Ulrich Tukur), a German art critic and collector discovered her paintings while she worked for him as a maid in his house in Senlis outside Paris. A moving and unexpected relationship develops between the avant-garde art dealer and the visionary cleaning lady leading to Seraphine's work being grouped with other painters ‚ the so-called ‚"Sacred Heart Painters" - with acclaimed shows in France, elsewhere in Europe and eventually at New York's MOMA . Martin Provost's poignant portrait of this now largely forgotten painter is a testament to the mysteries of creativity and the resilience of one woman's spirit. A sleeper hit in France last fall, SERAPHINE went on to a surprise win of the Best Picture and Best Actress for Yolande Moreau along with five other awards at the Cesars - the French Academy Awards.

Description: In association with the Asbury Park Film Initiative, The ShowRoom will screen “Four Seasons Lodge”. In an inspiring and startling documentary, a remarkable tribe whose members are fast disappearing come together for one final summer in the Catskill Mountains, where they cook, gamble, fight, flirt, and dance - they’re Holocaust Survivors with a captivating joie de vivre and a bracing sense of humor. From the darkness of Europe's death camps to the lush mountains of New York's Catskills, “Four Seasons Lodge” portrays the final season for a community of Holocaust survivors who come together each summer to celebrate their lives. Directed by New York Times journalist Andrew Jacobs, beautifully photographed by a team of cinematographers including Albert Maysles (GIMME SHELTER, GREY GARDENS), the film is a counterintuitive film about the Holocaust, one that captures the Lodgers' intoxicating passion for living, in bracing contrast to lives harrowed by loss.

In every corner of the world, there's one question that can never be definitively answered, yet stirs up equal parts passion, curiosity, self-reflection and often wild imagination: "What is God?" Filmmaker Peter Rodger explores this profound, age-old query in the provocative non-fiction feature OH MY GOD? This visual odyssey travels the globe with a revealing lens examining the idea of God through the minds and eyes of various religions and cultures, everyday people, spiritual leaders and celebrities. His goal: to give the viewer the personal, visceral experience of some kind of reasonable, meaningful definition of one of the most used—some might say overused--words in most every language.
Rodger's quest takes him from the United States to Africa, from the Middle East to the Far East, where such fundamental issues as: "Did God create man or did man create God?, "Is there one God for all religions?" and "If God exists, why does he allow so much suffering?" are explored in candid discussions with the various Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and even atheists the filmmaker meets along the way.
OH MY GOD? stars Hugh Jackman, Seal, Ringo Starr, Sir Bob Geldof, Princess Michael of Kent, David Copperfield and Jack Thompson. The film’s running time is 98 minutes; it is not rated. |
