HIKE STATS: Meeting Time: 8:45 AM Hike Distance: up to 6 miles Estimated Hike Time: 3 hours Difficulty: Moderate (Easy if you shorten your hike) Trip Leader: Tanr Cost: $4 admission Dogs? Yes, if leashed FWNC entrance fee is $4. Be sure to pick up a trail map at the gatehouse so you can find the Greer Island parking area. The brewery is just south of downtown and open to the public from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. While TexasÂÂ' uniquely confounding alcohol laws prohibit the sale of beer at the brewery, they will sell you a nice souvenir pint glass for $5 and fill it three times for free with whatever beer you want to sample. They usually have live music and they serve barbecue. This is a "meet and greet" style political and business networking meeting with very limited speak and listen time. They are asking for donations of canned goods, an unwrapped toys or FRNs (cash). The Materials Science & Engineering Department hosts special presentations by Drs. Peter C. Searson, professor of materials science and engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and J.W. Morris, professor of metallurgy, materials science and mineral engineering at the University of California - Berkeley.
At 9:00am, Dr. Searson presents a technique for the electrochemically-programmed release of biomolecules and nanoparticles on patterned electrodes, bringing new insight into cell de-adhesion.
At 2:00pm, Dr. Morris will discuss a new class of structural materials, "Gum Metals," high-strength, superelastic bcc alloys.
