Description: The Hurunui Day on a Wild River is being held to highlight the importance of wild rivers and the need to protect them from dams. The events are organised by eight conservation and recreation organisations that have united to speak up for our wild rivers and is one of 10 being held throughout New Zealand.
· Try out kayaking with White Water New Zealand.
· Learn to cast a fly with Fish and Game.
· Watch endangered birdlife with Forest and Bird.
· Watch the kayak slalom competition (11am until 2pm)
· Learn how to check and clean for didymo.
· DoC information officer on hand.
· Sausage sizzle.
· Hot and cold drinks provided.
Where?
The event is based alongside the Hurunui River at the Jollie Brook confluence. See the accompanying map and instructions on how to get there.
Why a Wild Rivers Day?
Wild and scenic rivers are a big part of New Zealand’s heritage yet throughout the country they are under threat for irrigation and hydro development.
The Hurunui River is extremely popular for its white water rafting and kayaking, scenic beauty, rich wildlife and cultural history.
Turning up to celebrate the river is a positive way to tell decision-makers and the media that we love our wild rivers and want them to stay that way.
Bring…
Picnic lunch, togs, wetsuit or polyprops if you plan to get wet, sturdy footwear, sunhat & sunscreen, binoculars if you want to bird-watch, warm clothing and a smile.
For more information, contact Hugh Canard (White Water New Zealand) on 332 3414 or 021 406546 , Tony Hawker (Fish and Game) on 366 9191 or 021 221 8325, or Bruce Coleman (Forest and Bird) on 376 4979 or 021 376 807. |

Description: Learn the choreography of "All That Jazz" from the stage performance of Chicago, choreography Bob Fosse (USA). Taught by London West End performer - AJ O Neill
Sunday 6th Dec. 2 - 6pm Dance Theatre of Ireland Studio, Dun Laoghaire
The musical Chicago was first seen on Broadway with spectacular direction & choreography by Bob Fosse. Fosse's style of dance is unmistakeable - inverted arms & shoulders combine with slow deliberate extensions & contorted poses to create plateaus no other choreographer had attempted before and thousands have copied since.
The story of Roxie Hart & Velma Kelly, femme fatales in 1920's Chicago, is now synonymous with slick, stylish theatre with a sense of humour and real bite.
AJ O Neill joined the West End cast of Chicago in 2007 as dance swing and understudy. He has played every male role in the show bar one and has a unique insight into the different strengths and styles needed to perform different aspects of Fosse's choreography. This workshop will cover a few of the different styles of the show. It will teach the vocabulary of the steps from ALL THAT JAZZ (& time permitting...other routines from the show). As part of the workshop AJ will be imparting the pinciples & background of Fosse's technique and some of Fosse's famed group movement. |

Description: House filled with kids for Thanksgiving? Get all that excess energy out at Mystic Seaport's annual Field Days!
Participate in 19th-century games on the Village Green, make your own puppet in our creative puppet-making workshop and explore the autumn sky under the Planetarium dome.
Children will enjoy singing along to rollicking songs of the sea in our "Tales and Tunes" program, climbing aboard the Museum's fleet of playscape boats and discovering the world's last wooden whaleship, the Charles W. Morgan, as she rests ashore in the Museum's shipyard undergoing a three-year restoration.
And while you're here, don't forget to check out our regular schedule of activities including demonstrations aboard tall ships, daily music programs, horse and carriage rides through our 19th-century village and interactive exhibits.
When it's time to eat, the Galley Restaurant has a menu full of kid's favorites (plus lots of choices for Mom and Dad, too).
Spend quality time with your family this Thanksgiving Day weekend at Mystic Seaport. |

Description: Dates: Thursday, December 3, 6:30-8:30pm. Canoe trip Saturday, December 5, 1:00pm—5:00pm
Travel through time beginning when Texas and the Arboretum site experienced a glacier that formed Buffalo Bayou, the Trinity and Brazos Rivers along with occasional alluvium terraces and the commencement of the woodland era. Observe the development of the various Early and Late Prehistoric occupations that created trail-roads across and along the Cibolo River. Learn about the early explorers attempting settlement on the Santa Rosa del Alcazar in the search for gold and silver in the 16th century and those trading mirrors for fur and hides during the 17th century. Follow travelers through the Arboretum during the 18th and 19th centuries in fording the bayou at “Dutchman’s Crossing." Hear about the lives and activities of the first settlers in the Arboretum and Archery range as well as those along Buffalo Bayou at the place known as “Pleasant Bend, Texas” and “Dolly Varden Point.” This class will be followed by a half-day canoe trip down the bayou to see important sites firsthand. Be part of an exciting floating classroom of natural, fluvial, historical, and geological information in our cities most important natural asset.
