Description: Rocco Leonard Martino, Ph.D., local author and entrepreneur will speak about his latest publication, “Cancel Christmas!” on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. in the Social Room, Fournier Hall. The lecture is sponsored by the College’s Business Department.
“Cancel Christmas!” (Infinity Publishing, 2009) looks at the intrusion of government on the lives of people, using the example of government canceling the Christmas holiday due to the influence of a powerful, greedy businessman’s whim. “Cancel Christmas!” is about character, and the conflicting emotions and forces that permeate human life - greed, fear, love, tradition, duty, and conscience. Following the lecture, Dr. Martino will offer a Q&A session and will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.
“I wrote this book to be an important message for people who cherish freedom and tradition,” says Martino. “I chose storytelling with humorous interludes to present a gripping possibility. “Cancel Christmas!” will make the reader laugh and also angry. The idea presented in the book could happen. Greed, ambition, and the misuse of taxpayer money are nothing new. This book depicts the classic struggle between might and right; and between raw power and thoughtful evaluation.” |

Description: Write Your Story: The Splendid Gift of Not Knowing, Writer Workshop with Denise Michelle Harris
Tuesday, December 8th @ 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., Hayward Main Library, 835 C St. at Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA. 94541 (2 Blocks from Hayward BART)
Denise Michelle Harris, author of the bestselling novel Sweet Bye-Bye, continues her free writer’s workshop series. One of the most common fears expressed by writers is, “I don’t have any good ideas.” A difficult lesson a writer must learn is that uncertainty is an integral part of the writing process. Denise will lead workshop participants in exercises from The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante, aimed at helping you to harness the inevitable doubt and uncertainty of the creative process in order to begin discovering your own voice and material. This workshop will be based on Chapter 2: The Splendid Gift of Not Knowing. Workshop participants can complete the exercises before class, and, time permitting, will have the opportunity to share excerpts from their writing with other workshop participants. Bring your questions and get your creative juices going. Advance registration required - call 510-881-7980 to sign up. For more information, or to obtain the writing exercises, contact Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. |

Georgette Heyer’s mystery is a wonderful example of a classic British country house mystery. Written in 1939, it features the superlatively analytical Inspector Hemingway who is confronted by a seemingly impossible murder, no one was near the murder weapon at the time the shot was fired! All the various participants on the scene are suspicious and then there’s the blackmail plot……..

Description: Join Watson Adventures on a unique scavenger hunt for adults and kids 7 & up!
Follow in the footsteps of young wizards on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in search of art that echoes characters, places and enchanted objects in the famed Harry Potter books and movies. Keep your trusty wand handy as you track down a powerful sorceress, a Snape-like potions master, flying owls and dragons, Hagrid-like giants, centaurs and unicorns like those you’d see in the Forbidden Forest, strange mermaids and sharks that seem straight out of the Triwizard Tournament, fierce knights in armor, and cloaked and masked figures as scary as any Death Eater or Dementor. Wizards and muggles (i.e., people who aren’t Potter experts) can play and enjoy this game. The hunt is not an addition to or variation on Harry’s adventures, but instead references to the books will provide a surprising bridge to many strange and wonderful works of art. It’s a great way to discover—or rediscover—the Met. This hunt is designed for kids and adults to do together, but all-adult teams will be allowed to compete separately. Kids must be accompanied by adults. For ages 7 and up. Prices, which include museum admission: Ages 7-17 $29.50; Ages 18 & up $38.50.
Advance purchase is required via http://www.watsonadventures.com. Questions? Call 877-9GO-HUNT.
Watson Adventures also offers scavenger hunts throughout the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Grand Central, Little Italy/Chinatown, Greenwich Village and other locations throughout the city. Public scavenger hunts are also available in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
