Allan McCollum & Allen Ruppersberg M/M (Paris) Continuous Project Liam Gillick Moriceau & Mrzyk Trisha Donnelly ___________________________________________ LA SUITE comes before and after at the same time: before the following exhibition and after the preceding one, because it will still be there, at least until the end of the year. But it doesn't necessarily follow the order of the openings. LA SUITE has already begun, with a work from the preceding Guyton\Walker exhibition. LA SUITE will continue with the gallery's artists and guests. LA SUITE makes no presumptions, except that of the free exercise of memory and association, and of the surprise they can generate. And if there's a sequence – a SUITEness – between works, it's because when a work is unique (or pretty much so), its unity as an ensemble or a series is the outcome of a process it triggers and which, in return, establishes it as art. In which case each work will already be its own self-contained SUITE. But how do works follow each other? Description: The Art of Dr. Seuss - A Retrospective Exhibition celebrates the artistic contributions of Theodor Seuss Geisel.
The exhibition chronicles his life and career with a focus on the common artistic links throughout his nearly 70 years of creativity.
The exhibition begins with his early drawings in Life Magazine and includes his editorial, advertising, military, book illustrations and The Secret Art Collection. The exhibition features rare and never-before-seen art from the 1920's to 1990's.
About the exhibition:
Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920's. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modeled sculpture and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination.
His unique artistic vision emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered 44 children's books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and clever humor. Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th Century and the inspired nonsense of a child's classroom doodles.
This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of a celebrated American icon and chronicles almost seven decades of work that, in every respect, is uniquely, stylistically and endearingly "Seussian."
Works in this exhibition have been curated from significant public and private collections, including the Dr. Seuss Archives at the University of California San Diego, The Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, The Dr. Charles M. Cohen Collection, The Collection of Charles I. Henderson and Susan A. Henderson, and the Estate of Dr. Seuss. It is with tremendous enthusiasm that we present nearly 70 years worth of American history via the timeless, groundbreaking, and imminently fun work of Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Description: Description: An exhibition of 65 early monochromatic etchings by Russian-born artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985).
The exhibit is based on two popular literary documents: Les Ames mortes (The Dead Souls) by 19th-century Russian novelist Nikolai Gogol, and Selected Fables, by 18th-century French author Jean de La Fontaine.
This exhibition focuses on the early etchings of the 1920s, when Chagall had moved to Paris with his young bride following the Russian Revolution of 1917. Chagall produced more than 200 etchings for the Parisian art dealer and publisher Ambrose Vollard, beginning with a commission to illustrate Dead Souls, the masterpiece of 19th-century Russian literature by Nikolai Gogol.
From 1923 to 1925, he created 107 etchings to illustrate this powerful tale of Russian village life. In the novel, Gogol creates and Chagall would illustrate vignettes describing gossipy women, grotesque misers, venal officials, a drunken coachman and others.
Hardly had Chagall completed the work for Dead Souls when Vollard commissioned a second series of etchings, for the Fables of la Fontaine.
Chagall was attracted to the works of Jean de la Fontaine, the 17th-century poet and fabulist, because of their imaginative stories and moral strengths. He could harmonize his pictorial language with la Fontaine's imagery: universal themes of greed and flattery, envy and avarice, love and friendship, old age and death.

Description: Description: Matisse’s paintings hang in some of the greatest museums in the world. This exhibition offers a look at another aspect of this famous artist’s work. Interestingly enough, his painstakingly created book illustrations were among the pieces of which he was most proud.
Most art lovers are acquainted with the boldly colored paintings of Henri Matisse, one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Fewer are aware of his art books, though Matisse himself declared: “I do not distinguish between the construction of a book and that of a painting.”
The Art Books of Henri Matisse presents four of these rare and engaging works, selected from the Bank of America Collection. The artist’s techniques are as diverse as the books’ subjects. In Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé, Matisse uses elegant, simple lines to illustrate the complex poems of the French Symbolist and, in doing so, revolutionizes the concept of the illustrated book. In Pasiphaé, Chant de Minos (Les Crétois) Matisse retells the story of the wife of King Minos and the Minoan bull through striking linoleum engravings.
Special thanks to Bank of America for their sponsorship of this exhibition. This exhibition is provided by the Bank of America Art in our Communities Program.
