Let's photograph the sunrise at Makapu'u Lighthouse. Meeting at 5:30am will give us plenty of time to hike up to the lighthouse, find spots and set up before sunrise begins. Makapu'u Lighthouse is one of Hawaii's most familiar landmarks commanding a spectacular view of the Windward side of O'ahu. The lighthouse was built in 1909 and automated in 1974. A 2-mile paved trail leads to the lighthouse and a fantastic view of the entire coastline and the island of Molokai in the distance. Two smaller islands can be clearly seen from this lookout - Manana Island, the largest, and Kaohikaipu Island. The Molokai Channel runs past Makapu'u Lighthouse and is an excellent spot for watch Humpback whales as they travel the channel between December and April. Useful Information: * This is a moderate 2-mile hike that is paved but is quite steep in spots * There is no shade or restroom facilities along this trail * Start before noon due to the heat, bring plenty of water, and wear sunscreen * Parking is along the street - no cars allowed on the trail * Do not leave valuables in your car Directions: From Waikiki take Kalakaua Avenue past the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park. Turn right onto Diamond Head Road. Follow the signs going East (to your left) to Kalanianaole Highway (Route 72). Go past Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach Park to Hawaii Kai Golf Course. About ½ mile past the golf course on the right is a gate blocking the trail entrance. The gate to the parking lot will still be closed when we get there. You'll have to park on the shoulder of the road. Things you'll may want bring: TRIPOD EXTRA BATTERY EXTRA CARD FLASHLIGH (Makes it a lot easier to read your settings in the dark) WATER SNACK JACKET (It may be cold) UMBRELLA or RAINCOAT (Just in case) If you get lost or need more information call Stan (808) 383-0940.

For many of us, Thanksgiving is a day to kick back, relax, watch some TV and have a very special home cooked meal. Unfortunately, there exists a segment of our Honolulu population for whom this day of thanks may or may not happen. Many individuals, couples and entire families need our help, in order that they may join us in our celebration. This is an opportunity for us to share some of our good cheer and fortune with those less fortunate. Please contribute to The Institute for Human Services "Give Thanks" project this Thanksgiving. Pick up one or two of the items below, during your holiday grocery trip, and deliver them to the Institute for Human Services anytime before Thanksgiving Day. Rice, Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc), Pasta and sauce, Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie filling, Pie Crusts, Canned veggies and fruits, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (purchased close to drop off date), Mashed Potatoes (boxed), Canned Gravy, Fresh Potatoes, Yams (canned or fresh), Juice, Powdered Milk, Gift cards for grocery stores. Large, usable pots and pans to place food items in, Toiletries (toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, tooth-brushes, etc) Along with your kind contribution, lets all pitch in and volunteer 4 hours of our time on Thanksgiving day, to help The Institute for Human Services assemble and deliver food baskets to those in need.
