Description: The 1999-film “Agnes Browne,” which chronicles with raw humor and great affection the comic misadventures of a large and lively Dublin family in the 1960s, will be shown as part of the library’s Celtic Film Series on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. Dr. Jack Willis, professor emeritus of English at William and Mary, will introduce the 1999, R-rated film, which is free of charge and for which no reservations are needed. For more information, visit www.wrl.org/programs, or call (757) 259-4070.
“Agnes Browne,” is based on a book of the same name written by popular Irish comedian, Brendan O’Carroll. The unexpected death of her husband sends Agnes (Anjelica Huston, who also directed) and her seven children, ages two - 14, into emotional turmoil and financial crisis in 1967 Dublin. Her one wish is to be able to see Tom Jones appearing in concert. Huston drew on her own background growing up in Ireland in creating the atmosphere for the film.
Williamsburg Regional Library presents the Celtic Film Series, now in its 10th season, in cooperation with the John Cardinal O’Connor Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The series explores the history, drama and quirky humor of films made in or about Celtic lands and people. |

Description: The Rafael inaugurates a quarterly series, Everybody's Classics, featuring big-screen presentations of classic films that everyone can enjoy, offered free to the public and made possible through the support of the Koret Foundation. This series begins with Charlie Chaplin's 1936 masterwork Modern Times, screened in a restored 35mm print.
Marking the final appearance of Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character, Modern Times is the great comedian's satirical look at city life and social injustice, beginning with our hero battling an assembly line with a mind of its own, and continuing as he struggles to make a living in a dog-eat-dog world. Co-starring his beautiful off-screen partner Paulette Goddard, Modern Times is an ingenious parade of hilarious gags with a social conscience. Chaplin wrote, directed and composed the music score, which includes the melody that would become the song favorite "Smile." Film 87 minutes.
Our 35mm print is from the recent restoration of this film, which is wholly appropriate for people of all ages. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater capacity is filled. |

Description: Film Arts Forum: Sundance Confidential
December 7, 7:30 pm
Mezzanine
(444 Jessie st)
Film Arts Forum is the Film Society’s bimonthly information-sharing, discussion, networking, professional development filmmaker jamboree. It’s an opportunity for Bay Area filmmakers and cineastes to meet one another and talk about their craft.
The Sundance Film Festival has grown from a small, informal festival into the world's largest showcase and marketplace for independent film. For filmmakers, a trip to Sundance can be a career-changing event, and strategic planning is key.
Sundance Confidential will explore, explain and demystify independent filmmaking’s big event. Learn from the real-world experiences of festival screeners, alumni filmmakers, publicists and other insiders who will be on hand to offer advice for getting the most out of the Sundance experience, even if you don’t have a film showing.
The panelists for the evening possess an impressive collective breadth of experience and knowledge about Sundance. Gail Silva served on two key Sundance advisory committees from 1990 to 2003 and is currently a screener for the festival’s World Cinema Documentary Competition. Entertainment lawyer George Rush has represented seven films at Sundance during the last four years. Adam Keker’s film On the Assassination of the President premiered at Sundance in 2008 and won the San Francisco International Film Festival’s Golden Gate Award for best Bay Area short film that same year. Hilary Hart, the San Francisco Film Society’s director of publicity, has attended Sundance annually since 1996.
Following the panel, Yoav Potash, who recently was awarded a documentary fund grant from the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program, will screen a clip from his current project Crime After Crime, a behind-bars look at women in prison and the intersection of law enforcement and domestic violence.
Tickets $5-$8
