Description: The ban against same-sex marriage has been in effect in Australia for over 5 years, this homophobic ban means that same sex couples are unable to explore and celebrate their relationships in the same way allowed to all other couples in Australia.
On November the 22nd the senate inquiry into same sex marriage will release its findings, the inquiry has received a record number of submissions demanding the same civil rights for all Australians. Regardless of the outcome of the inquiry, it’s important that everyone who supports equal marriage rights comes out on November 28 to launch the Year of Action to keep the pressure on the federal government to repeal this homophobic ban.
Together we can make November 28 just as big a success as August 1st because almost equal isn’t equal and we demand nothing less than full equal rights! |

Description: Presidential Medal of Freedom Awardee and Civil Rights figure:
Dr. Joseph Lowery
to speak at Glide Church, November 8, 2009 - 11am Celebrations
Rev. Joseph Lowery, 87, a major figure in the civil rights movement who marched with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and gave the benediction at Barack Obama's inauguration will preach at Glide Memorial Church (330 Ellis Street, San Francisco) at 11:00AM Celebrations on Sunday November 8th. The event is free and open to the public.
Best known for his wonderful benediction at the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009 ending with an interpolation of Big Bill Broonzy’s “Black, Brown and White”:
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. Let all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen! Say Amen! And Amen!
In 2006, at Coretta Scott King’s funeral, Dr. Lowery received a standing ovation when he remarked before four United States Presidents (including the standing president George Bush):
We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. But Coretta knew and we know that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance, poverty abounds, for war billions more . . . but no more for the poor!
Reverend Lowery has received many prestigious awards, among them: a Life Time Achievement Award for the NAACP in 1997; the Martin Luther King Jr. Center Peace Award and the National Urban League’s Whitney M. Young Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004; several honorary doctorates from colleges and universities including Dillard University, Morehouse College, Alabama State University and University of Alabama, Huntsville. Recently, in 2009, Reverend Lowery received the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.
Lowery was pastor of the Warren Street Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama from 1952 until 1961. His career in the civil rights movement began in the early 1950s in Mobile, Alabama. After Rosa Parks’ arrest in 1955, Lowery helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott. He headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association, an organization devoted to the desegregation of buses and public places. In 1957, with Martin Luther King Jr., Lowery founded the Southern Christina Leadership Conference and subsequently led the organization as its president from 1977 to 1997. He currently services as Founder of the Joseph E. Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights at Clark Atlanta University [www.loweryinstitute.org].

Description: As the Dow passes 10,000 and voices on the economy debate whether a recovery is imminent, renowned economist Joseph Stiglitz comes to Elizabethtown College to look back at the global economic crisis and to the future at its recovery. Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank, will be the featured speaker at Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, November 11. The event takes place in the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center and is free and open to the public. Tickets are required for the 7:00 p.m. event and can be reserved by calling the ticket hotline, 717-361-4757.
Dr. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001. Stiglitz will discuss the turbulence of the global economy, the economic collapse, and the ethical and management failures behind the current financial crisis. Looking at deeply rooted practices and policies, he draws forth the lessons we must learn from these times of economic trial in order to put the world economy back in balance. Did the stimulus package really help? What went wrong? How long will it take our economy to correct itself?
Recognized as a leading economist and educator, Stiglitz has written many books, including “Globalization and Its Discontents,” which has been translated into 35 languages. His books also include “The Roaring Nineties, Towards a New Paradigm in Monetary Economics” and “Making Globalization Work.” His most recent book, “The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict,” with Linda Bilmes of Harvard University, was published in March 2008. His next book, titled “Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy,” will be published in January 2010.
Stiglitz was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Clinton administration. He then became Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank from 1997-2000. He is a graduate of Amherst College and received his Ph.D. from MIT. In 2008, he was appointed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to chair a Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Economic Progress. In 2009 he was appointed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly as chair of the Commission of Experts on Reform of the International Financial and Monetary System, which also released its report in September 2009. He is currently University Professor at the Columbia Business School, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Department of Economics) and the School of International and Public Affairs.

Description: The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) will host community workshops to solicit public input on the future of land development in the Miami Valley Region.
GOING PLACES – An Integrated Land Use Vision for the Miami Valley Region is a 4-year regional land use planning initiative designed to bring people together to build a clear and shared future land use framework to guide development in the Miami Valley Region.
Following the 3-phase process, the current effort is focused on collecting information from people who live and work in the Region about what they envision for the future of the Region.
Do you have a vision for the Miami Valley Region in the year 2040? YOUR ideas and innovations are needed to help make the Miami Valley Region a better place to live, work and play! Come and join the Going Places discussion at any of the workshops in your area to share YOUR vision!
At all MVRPC Open Houses / Public Participation Meetings, interpreters for hearing impaired individuals or bilingual interpreters are available upon request. Requests should be made at least one week prior to the meeting date. Contact MVRPC at (937) 223-6323 or 1-800-750-0750 TTY/TDD to request an interpreter.
