America is consumed with battles between the secular and the religious, between those who want no part of Christianity or any other religion in public life, and those who think that only a nation ruled by God’s Law can hope to survive and flourish. Although in some respects Canada seems more inclined to allow religion into the public sphere – state-supported Catholic schools in Ontario for instance – overall, the science-religion controversy is not really one that bothers people north of the border. Focusing generally on the history of the science-religion debate and specifically on the peculiarities of American history, this talk tries to explain that paradox. |

Description: What did three Wise Men see in the sky two thousand years ago?
Dr. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will discuss the Star of Bethlehem at “The Christmas Star,” the next Open House Night in Astronomy. His nontechnical presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building and will be followed by telescope viewing from the college’s Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
Many theories for the Star of Bethlehem have been proposed—comet, meteor, exploding star, or possibly a conjunction of planets. “We’ll examine the Bible’s description of the star, and compare it with astronomical evidence to suggest a plausible explanation,” Knacke says. “I also have a computer simulation of the skies over Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago that shows what people might have seen and interpreted as a miraculous star.”
Open House Nights in Astronomy are a public outreach effort of the Penn State Behrend School of Science. For more information, phone 814-898-6105. |

Description: ** Soundings Theatre, Level 2 **
Did World Trade Center buildings 1, 2, and 7 collapse as a result of fire damage, or because of controlled demolitions? Architect Richard Gage and renowned physicist Dr Steven Jones present evidence that questions the official story of the destruction of these buildings on September 11, 2001.
Independent scientific researchers find the official explanation of the spectacular collapse of World Trade Center Buildings 1, 2, and 7 insufficient. The current official story blames fire damage for the ‘global collapse’ of the three steel-framed skyscrapers. If this was the case, why was nano-thermite, a high-tech explosive material, found in the dust from WTC building collapses?
Richard Gage is the founding member of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth (www.ae911truth.org) and has been practising architecture for over 20 years.
Physics professor Dr Steven Jones is the co-founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth and Justice (www.stj911.org). He holds that the World Trade Center buildings were destroyed by controlled demolition during the September 11 attacks.
John Bursill is the facilitator of this discussion. He is a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer and the principal organiser of the The Hard Evidence Tour Down Under and several other events, including the Sydney Truth Now Conference 2008 and Delusion 9/11. He is currently touring Australia with his talk, ‘Why 9/11 Truth?’ www.truthaction.org.au |

Description: The stars that speckle the sky have long fascinated humanity, but only in the past century have astronomers figured out how stars are born, live, and die. Now we can use that knowledge to address the question: Which stars near the Sun might have planets with intelligent life? Drawing on both the laws of stellar evolution and the latest discoveries of extrasolar planets, Harvard-trained astronomer Dr. Ken Croswell describes the lives of stars and the alien worlds they may support.
The presentation will be family friendly and Dr. Croswell will sign his new book, The Lives of Stars after the presentation. Included with exhibit admission and free for members. |

Your Stem Cells At Work
• We need vitamins, antioxidants, good food, doctors and sometimes medication. But none of them rebuild the body. None of them can actually bring back new tissue, bone, organs or any part of the body. Science has just recently discovered that the only system known that actually rebuilds the body is your own adult stem cells. If they are not releasing into the bloodstream as they should, you suffer degradation in health.
• Traditional health supplements nourish existing cells. They do not create new cells.
• Medicines alter or aid the body’s response to health issues. But, they do not rebuild any part of the body.

Description: Children, families and people of all ages can discover what makes the world go round at âMotion Mania: Move Your Mind!â, a new hands-on exhibition at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.
Motion pervades nature. Everything on the earth experiences motion, from people and plants to spinning tops and moving pictures. Motion leads to change and change holds our attention. All animals â and probably plants â have sensory receptors to detect motion and change as part of their biological structures.
Featuring more than 30 hands-on exhibits, the new âMotion Maniaâ exhibition at the Fleet encourages children and adults to explore many kinds of motion, from those that underlie the solar system (circular motion), to pendular motions, fluid motion and motion illusions.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the Fleetâs newest in-house exhibition, an interactive kinetic sculpture called the âKuglebahnâ. The âKuglebahnâ highlights many different forms of energy, including potential (stored energy), kinetic (energy of motion), sound, and electromagnetic energy. Using everyday items ranging from a wok and a lacrosse stick to billiard balls and a bike wheel, the âKuglebanâ requires no electricity. Visitors provide the needed energy by turning its handle, setting in motion a series of energy transformations that are fascinating to behold.
